In the past my art style has been either very realistic, or very symbolic. After thinking about why that might be, I decided to find out if it was possible to combine the two.
I rushed into the garden with my camera and took some photos to study, breaking the images down into shape and colour.
Starting with the shape I arranged the flowers in a way that allowed for precise proportions for the realistic part.
I then painted over the shape I had in place with varying intensities of black in order to take a symbolic approach to colour.
This looked alright, but flowers are popular for their vibrant colours and my paintings were missing out.
I reduced the opacity of the black and kept it as a foundation, and added ranges of colour in certain places to highlight the vibrancy I was trying to capture.
